BPI continues to support artists and art lovers in Art Fair Philippines 2023

'Horse Men' by Guerrero Z. Habulan
The bank that love the life you live. Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) returns with Art Fair Philippines 2023, strengthens their support for artists and art lovers.

BPI, a staunch advocate of Philippine Arts, supports visual artists through partnerships and art lovers through the provision of greater access to artworks in art events such as Art Fair Philippines, which is coming back face-to-face from a three-year hiatus.

“As we appreciate the value of artists and their works, we also see the significance of collecting and keeping great artworks, which is why we at BPI continue to provide our support as well to art lovers who, time and time again, visit Art Fair Philippines and acquire valuable artworks,” said Jenelyn Z. Lacerna, the Group Head of BPI Unsecured Lending and Cards, Product and Sales.

Art Fair Philippines 2023, which is happening on February 17-19 at The Link in Ayala Center in Makati City, will feature over 60 exhibitors from the Philippines and overseas as the art exhibition celebrates its 10th year. It is co-presented by BPI and Ayala Land, among other corporate supporters.

To promote art appreciation and further boost the local art scene, BPI offers complimentary access to cardholders of BPI Visa Signature, Platinum Rewards Mastercard, Amore Platinum Cashback, and Gold Mastercard.

“At BPI, we consider keepers of valuable art works as art investors, as the works they acquire become part of their investment portfolio,” Lacerna said.

BPI has been the caretaker of more than 1,000 artworks by many prominent Filipino artists, such as Fernando Amorsolo, Jose Joya, and Ben Cabrera. Most of these art pieces are the country’s finest expressions of Philippine culture and are reflective of BPI’s inherent values.
“The kind of support BPI gives to art lovers provides them greater access to exclusive events such as Art Fair Philippines, which continues to showcase the country’s vibrant local art scene and helps Filipino visual artists generate support and reach a wider audience,” Lacerna added.

BPI affirms its commitment to recognize and nurture the country’s artistry and talent through its participation in events like this.

One of the many galleries featured in the art fair is Art Cube, which provides a platform for talented young artists to showcase their works before an extensive roster of art collections. The gallery, which will be located on the 5th Level, Booth No. 5, will feature the works of father-and-son Renato and Guerrero Habulan, showing a glimpse of ordinary people: iconic images of the masses, their dignity amid hardship, and as an inspiration. Renato, a post-war and contemporary painter, is one of the most influential and award-winning watercolor artists in the country. Guererro, a recipient of the Thirteen Artists Awards of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, combines different figurative styles and approaches—from hyperrealism to pop surrealism to the “ready-made” images of silk screen printing.

Also featured in this year’s edition of the art fair includes Celine Lee, who has been recognized for her work, including the Juror’s Choice Award of Merit at the Philippine Art Awards in 2020. She has a diverse portfolio that includes paintings, sculptures, embroidery pieces, and multimedia works that show her innovative use of different materials and media.

Art lovers can also check out the works of Winna Go, a finalist in multiple competitions in 2018, such as the LRT Art Competition, Shell National Student Art Competition, Metrobank Art and Design Excellence Competition, and Regional Winner for Philippine Art Awards. In most of her works, she gathers inspiration from the history of the Chinese diaspora, the richness of the Chinese and Filipino culture, her identity and positionality in society, and the beauty of nature.
“We invite the art enthusiasts out there to come and join us at the Art Fair Philippines and discover the country’s artistry and talent. Check out the many participating galleries that showcase Filipino artistry at its best,” Lacerna added.

Getting the best tour this Christmas

The Aguinaldo Shrine at night.
Kawit Celebrates Christmas with a Historical Touch

Are we almost done in Christmas shopping? or school break is in but nothing to do? Why not spare some time by visiting or revisiting one of the historic places of the Philippines? Christmas has always been a part of the Filipino tradition and culture and what better way to celebrate the holidays is by visiting some of the most historic sites in the country with your friends and loved ones.

Mural inside the museo in Aguinaldo Shrine.
Kawit in Cavite is one of the most sought-after historical sites in the country today and it is one that you should visit this Christmas Season. Kawit, Cavite is home to some of the most historic sites in the country. This is where the Aguinaldo Shrine is situated wherein the Philippine flag that we know of today was first waved publicly announcing our Independence by none other than the first Filipino President Emilio Aguinaldo. There’s also a lot to learn about our first president and how he has lived his life and times during the revolution era. Beyond the Shrine also are other sights to see including the “Museo ni Baldomero Aguinaldo” hailed towards the cousin of Emilio Aguinaldo and grandfather of Cesar Virata who as a prime minister in the 1980s.

The Pandayan humble shop.
Kawit also boasts rich crafts and delicacies including the 'Pandayan' or the local blacksmithing shop. Blacksmithing is an endangered craft that needs to be promoted and preserved. The local 'Pandayan' is open accepting made-to-order on-site requests or support their craft by buying ready made items in their humble shop. The items are handcrafted knives and bolos made the same way during the Revolutionary era. Search for Pandayan Street. It's 10 minute walk from St. Mary Magdalene Church, you can ask the locals to guide you there.
Bisugo's Eatery special puto bumbong at reasonable price at 30 pesos.
The Christmas specialty – Puto Bumbong or rice cake with shaved coconut and muscovado sugar is a staple food trip stop that shouldn’t be missed when visiting Kawit. Look for 'Bisugo's Eatery special putobumbong' along the highway.

Kawit celebrates the Christmas season through a spectacular display of lights at the Aguinaldo Shrine and Freedom Park. The Christmas lighting event was held last December 14, 2019 and a number of distinguished guests and celebrities joined in celebration of the event. A fireworks display and lighting of the Christmas lights at the Freedom park was also held. Make sure to visit Kawit Cavite this Christmas Season and enjoy the season filled with pride of our own heritage and historical sites in Kawit. The Municipality of Kawit welcomes everyone who wishes to visit Kawit during the Christmas season.

Health | High five for the Global Handwashing Day

P&G and Safeguard Philippines joins forces with Manila Water Foundation in celebrating Global Handwashing Day last October 15, 2019 at the Bagong Nayon IV Elementary School in Antipolo City, Rizal.
Safeguard Philippines spreads awareness on proper handwashing in schools and hospitals

Manila, 15 October 2019 - CLEAN HANDS promote good health! CLEAN HANDS prevent infections! CLEAN HANDS save lives. Since 2008, Safeguard Philippines has been celebrating Global Handwashing Day alongside various institutions and communities. This 2019, Safeguard Philippines partnered with Manila Water Foundation and the Philippine General Hospital to once more promote greater awareness and vigilance on the benefits of CLEAN HANDS, especially in schools and hospitals.

Global Handwashing Day (GHD) is celebrated every October 15 by more than 200 million people in 100 countries. Each year, GHD aims to promote a global culture of clean hands through handwashing with soap and water. Keeping hands clean is one of the most important things anyone can and everyone should do to stay healthy. Studies have shown that hand washing can prevent 1 in 3 diarrhea-related illnesses and 1 in 5 respiratory infections, such as a cold or the flu. During this period when our country is affected by various infectious diseases, it is now even more urgent to remind all of us of the importance of keeping our hands clean by washing our hands. Handwashing with soap is an effective way to prevent many infectious diseases and saves lives.

The GHD theme this year “CLEAN HANDS FOR ALL” means we must find a way that all people from all walks of life, in both urban and rural areas, whether in public or private places, in all homes, schools, workplaces, have access to basic hand washing facilities with soap and water. Most of the time handwashing is easy and affordable but sometimes some places can have challenges which limit access to the usual handwashing facilities.

Raising awareness one school at a time

Learning how to correctly wash our hands is a fundamental skill our children must learn. Getting into the clean hands habit by frequent hand washing, especially before eating and after using the toilet is valuable to good health and favorable personal development. Schools and school teachers are among the most important partners of Safeguard Philippines through the years of GHD. Many schools, however, do not have sufficient handwashing facilities.

Months leading to this significant celebration of proper hygiene, Safeguard partnered with Manila Water Foundation in the construction of 5-faucet handwashing facilities and the provision of hygiene kits in more than 30 public schools in key cities nationwide, to benefit more than 100,000 public school students and teachers.

P&G and Safeguard Philippines together with the Antipolo Government Mayor Andeng and Councilor Susana, executives from DepEd and Manila Water at the Inauguration of the 5-faucet hand washing facility held at the Bagong Nayon IV Elementary School in Antipolo City, Rizal. [1st row L-R] P&G Corporate Communications Manager Charmaine Banzuelo, Safeguard Philippines Communications Manager Jeune San Juan, DepEd Undersecretary Tonisito Umali, Bagong Nayon IV Elementary School Principal Erwin Acorda, Antipolo City Mayor Andrea Ynares, Antipolo City Councilor Susana Say; [2nd row L-R] MWF Executive Director Reginald Andal, Dr. Rommel Bautista, MWF Rizal Area Business Manager Kristoffer Sabater, DepED Schools Division Superintendent Region IV-A, MWF East Zone Business Manager Marvin Panday, and DepEd Medical Officer Dr. Rico Reyes.

In the spirit of CLEAN HANDS FOR ALL, last October 14, more than 100 Grade 4 students in Antipolo took part in a handwashing session to coincide with the inauguration of hygiene facilities which were built in 20 Antipolo schools with the support from Safeguard and Manila Water Foundation. Two thousand hygiene kits containing a towel and Safeguard hand soap were also distributed to the children at the celebration, which also highlights their Lingap Eskwela-Linis Lusog Kabataan collaboration. Antipolo City Mayor Andrea “Andeng” Bautista-Ynares graced the event and shared the importance of private sector partnerships to keep kids in schools! This message was echoed by the DepED Public Schools Division Superintendent Region IV-A.

For this year’s observance of Global Handwashing Day, Safeguard has also partnered with the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) to promote greater awareness of the benefits of handwashing, particularly in a major hospital.

Renewing the commitment to Clean Hands in Healthcare Settings

Large hospitals such as the Philippine General Hospital are strategic partners in the CLEAN HANDS Campaign. PGH is considered the biggest modern government tertiary hospital in the Philippines, servicing more than 600,000 patients annually. In any ordinary day, the PGH has over 2,000 patients either in any of its 19 clinical departments admitted in their wards or being seen in any one of its out-patient clinics. CLEAN HANDS in PGH advocates use of alcohol and handwashing and part of Patient Safety.

At the signal of 10am of October 15, the entire PGH community joined the Simultaneous Hand Hygiene Event and performed hand hygiene whether they were in the clinical areas, wards, clinics, operating rooms or in classrooms or conferences. Through this event, each and every healthcare worker reaffirmed his or her commitment to Clean Hands. All PGH department chairs, chief nurses, and administrative staff of the hospital signed their commitment to include Hand Hygiene in training and service activities. Advocacy for Clean Hands is expanded to the university community as well. Hand Hygiene posters created by the medical students were featured. Nurses and doctors also taught hundreds of parents, family members and bantays of PGH patients to understand the importance of handwashing in their own families. Hopefully this activity cascades the benefits of Clean Hands campaign to their homes and communities.

“Handwashing is one of the most important hygienic practices that children and health workers have to take to heart. This is why Safeguard proactively promotes the practice of washing hands with soap. Through the Global Handwashing Day celebration, we hope to raise even more awareness on its health benefits,” said Clarence Lim-Ignacio, Safeguard Brand Manager.

Together, let us renew our commitment to practice handwashing and help stop the spread of illnesses that can be caused by germs. Whoever you are, whatever you do, practice frequent handwashing. Observe CLEAN HANDS not only during the Global Handwashing Day and every day from this day onward. And let us all work towards Clean Hands for ALL, this means no one is left behind in these efforts.

Beauty | Wacoal Philippines on it's 30th year

In celebration of Wacoal Philippine's 30th mark of helping Pinays on their daily lives, the brand launched a campaign for women titled 'Wacoal's Women of the World'. They've installed a five (5) day interactive exhibit located at the 3rd Level of SM Makati last June 26 - 30, 2019.

In line with their anniversary theme "Uplifting Women for 30 years", the brand exhibited remarkable stories of 30 women from various fields such as social entrepreneurship, aviation, art management, publishing, public speaking, content creation, and personal branding among others.

Right on the spotlight of the exhibit were the portraits of 30 multi-hyphenate women, as well as their stories of hardwork and success. Some of them led talks on their personal journey, and how each and every one can make their mark, too.

This embodies the company's persistence in helping more and more ladies realize their significance and excellence no matter where they are, no matter what lifestyle they have chosen to live and pursue.

Part of the campaign's amazing roster of individuals; include sports broadcaster and enthusiast Dyan Castillejo, advocate of renewable energy Ruth Yu Owen, campaigner of strong social responsibility and designer Zarah Juan, and visual artist Celeste Lecaroz.

"From the products that we offer, to the advocacies we promote, our brand guarantees that every single Filipina realizes their beauty and worth," Ann Christine Palisoc, president of Philippine Wacoal Corporation, said.

Such empowering campaign direction - highlighting the transition from challenges to achievements - not only mirrors who the company stands for, but how it has also reached its current stature in the intimate apparel industry.

"When we started it, it was real struggle with the department stores who expected us to offer discounts. But through constant communication, they began to understand our brand values. The superior quality of the products spoke for themselves and today, the department stores have become valuable business partners with relationships based on trust," shared Palisoc.

Aside from moving stories and engaging discussions, each day of the interactive exhibit was packed with activities and concepts  that further show the company's value for freedom - freedom to explore, move and have fun.

Traveling is our way to discover new things. The venue featured travel-inspired photobooths in 3D setup where in the Wacoal brand has establish its presence on the following top international destinations; Eiffel Tower of Paris, New York's Statue of Liberty and Cherry Blossoms of Japan.

Event goers unleashed their creativity with the 'Create Your Own Power Frame', which allow them to become cover model of their own magazine. Other exciting activities also include glitter tattoo, tarot card reading, and of course, participants also tried on different Wacoal items on site.

Aside from the June 26 to 30 exhibit, the company also held a dinner gala last June 4 to recognize the notable people behind the brand's success in the country. It also showcase their accomplishments and bigger plans in the following years to come.

"Our focus is to grow the boutique business and further elevate the brand image by providing more exciting premium product lines and even better customer service. Better customer service means improving one's total experience, from better facilities offering more comfort  and privacy to better communication with our beauty advisers," said Palisoc.

One can expect Philippines Wacoal Corporation to continue to offer high quality functional and comfortable products but in addition to this, even more premium products featuring elegance and comfort while consistently enhancing the beauty of the woman's body. You can also watch out for more exciting new product lines including lingerie, men's underwear, and more activewear for women.

Beauty | Going J-idol look with Novelina

I have visited this FREE Hair Color application from Novelina at the 3rd level of Cash and Carry, Makati.

I'm excited and nervous to try this Novelina Zeelkee Cream Hair Color with Keratin. It's formulated in Japan - so it's safe. They have handful of colors to chose from; Natural Black, Chestnut Brown, Golden Brown and Natural Brown. If you prefer add wow factor, Burgundy and Crimson Red. I've picked Chestnut Brown to complement my warm skin tone and for personal taste, it's close to auburn - red.

A little back story, I grew up keeping my hair with its natural color because I'm afraid of hair coloring products that will make your hair dry. There are times I want to change my look without applying direct color on my hair. I've invested on daily wigs but the longer I use, it feels heavy and it felt unreal on the photos. I have to keep a mental note to wash the wigs and comb it often that ate my time for my passion projects. I need to do something.

An invitation of free hair color came by and I asked myself why not I take the chance of having my hair colored? If I'm starting to be lazy to use my daily wigs and growing tired with my natural hair color.

Daisy, the person assisted me, introduced me with the product. The product have a brush and tube liquid mixture. She brushes the mixture evenly on my hair root to tips and by layer until the small bowl is empty. (PS. If you have longer hair and want to achieve vibrant color, you may opt to add more of the same color. It costs less than 50 pesos.)

To let the color mixture stick to your hair, you need to keep it at least an hour. You can go browse on your phone or read e-book while waiting. The estimate price for this DIY Hair color with keratin is around 300 pesos. It's affordable.

Sharing with you the before and after (days of) application:

My natural black hair are growing out my previous hair color from my last salon visit. This leaves the Chestnut Brown color stays at the mid to tip of my hair. I'm happy with my result - slight ombre similar to few J-idol (Japanese idol) girl group. It looks gorgeous with flash and under the sun.

For better result, if you're blessed with lighter hair color or you recently have your hair bleached. When you DIY or visit their booth, the color will be noticeable. If you're afraid of getting your hair dry from using the product. They have Novelina Hair and Scalp - Keratin Treatment, to add shine and smoothness.

Catch Novelina mini booth on the following malls below:

June 1 - 30, 2019 --- Cash and Carry Mall, 3rd Level (near food court area)
June 1 - 30, 2019 --- Metro Angeles, Pampanga

Fashion | Get your summer favorites from Sun, Sand, and Squad collection

It's the season for the weekend getaways and embrace the vitamin sea. You might have missing items to add in your ootd. Do not worry because Shangri-La Plaza got you covered with their stylish summer pieces. Their Summer Fashion Show 2019 titled Sun, Sand, and Squad brought to you their adored prints, hues of blue and sailor pieces that would fit in your getaway trips.

Back by popular demand, sailor stripes and chic anchor prints populate resort dressing. Get these seafaring looks from adorable sailor-inspired outfits for kids, to collegiate, sporty-luxe grown-up versions.

From tropical and botanical, to floral and geometric, fashion still has a preoccupation for prints. Wear them all over, madly and merrily. Wear art on your sleeve – literally – and take on the modern, updated tie-dye. These aren’t just for hippies anymore.

Nothing spells summer better than pops of color. Try the yellow-white-gray-black color combination creatively inspired by a sea gull on a rocky shore to inject more oceanic vibes. Or dive right in with cool blue, aquamarine, and turquoise, green sea anemone, and fiery coral shades of a world under the sea.

The color story continues with soft, pale pastels for sweet-toothed toddlers, or standout neon colors for the bold and beautiful. Stay fresh with the season’s coolest shade, sage green, especially when paired with crisp whites and neutrals.

Stock up on graphic tees and wear them with everything, from skirts to lounge bottoms, and under strappy dresses. Boiler suits have been elevated from utilitarian protective garment to stylish and functional summer piece.

Denim is forever a style staple with the runways and city streets seeing a millennial revival of the classic blue jeans of the 80’s and 90’s, and the girls rocking sexy denim-and swimsuit combinations.

Higher temperatures mean showing more skin. Go Kim K-esque by wearing spandex as outerwear, or don the sartorial pick of summer, shorts, which have morphed into ultra shorts this season – higher on the gams and in Crayola colors, to turn a few heads at the beach and on the streets.

Keep professionally cool and chic in tailored modern suits in ocean hues, and channel that inner bohemian with crafty, artisanal handiwork on maxi dresses for a relaxing day off. Sophisticated summer evenings call for couture in blue hues with dramatic big bows, fringes and ruffles.

Shop all these hot #SunSandSquad trends from the show at Shangri-La Plaza to #FeelTheShangVibe this summer! For kids and teens (5:00PM), browse and buy must-have pieces at Ever New, Gap, Gingersnaps, Great Kids, Joe Fresh, JustG, Mango, Mothercare, Old Navy, Onitsuka Tiger, Periwinkle, Plains and Prints, Rustan’s Department Store, Sky Castle, Stradivarius, Superdry, The Original Penguin, and Unarosa.

Passion Project | Pinoy barista champion builds a coffee school for our kababayans

A business owner and the 2019 Philippine National Barista Champion holder, Michael Harris Lim, who is the first Filipino to move in the Semi-finals of the World Barista Championship in Boston, USA. He brought his advocacies with him and heard by the international stage, he continues to carry out his life’s work of creating a fully-sustainable coffee economy and takes another step towards realizing this vision—by officially opening the Institute for Coffee Excellence.

He opens this institute with his commitment to developing a variety of educational initiatives that focuses on instilling positive values that will help the learners grow and excel as coffee professionals.

Since he first ventured in the coffee business in 2001, he has been committed in providing solutions to elevate the quality of local crops and equip the Filipino farmers with tools and knowledge to help them keep up with the evolving industry. But through the competitions, Harris was able to see the industry in the perspective of a barista which made him realize that they also needed training in delivering the best coffee experience. As he stated, “This journey has inspired me to create a space to nurture the baristas and our Filipino coffee farmers.” Thus, he built the Institute for Coffee Excellence to have its thrust work at both ends of the spectrum: for farmers and baristas.

Harris envisions the institute as an instrument in fostering a community that works together for total sustainability to achieve the ultimate goal of having an increasingly steady food and coffee security for the Philippines and for the future generations to come. “The transformation of a community begins with education. In the case of our coffee community, I believe we would have to start by empowering our farmers and baristas with the knowledge, values and passion to work towards a beautiful coffee future,” he shares.

Prior to his participation in the national and world competitions, Harris makes vigorous effort in extending a helping hand to the thriving coffee industry as a social entrepreneur. While he actively supports coffee-producing communities in Benguet through the platforms he built such as the Foundation for Sustainable Coffee Excellence (FSCE) and The Giving Café, his eagerness to create greater initiatives that will benefit the local industry never ceased.

Driving his inspiration from the members of the coffee community, he's also aiming to make the Foundation for Sustainable Coffee Excellence as the country’s National Body licensed by World Coffee Events to hold the next competitions in 2020.
